Bespoke care for mistreated skin

'SOMETIMES it really is all in the timing. I was already looking forward to popping along to Neal's Yard for a facial because a) their products are lovely and b) having someone cleanse and tone your skin and give you a hand massage is always a treat. But the day before I was due to go for my treatment, as if by some horrible weather-inspired magic, the skin on my face started to feel like fine-gauge sandpaper and it didn't look much better.

Neal's Yard's holistic facial isn't just a poshed-up cleanse and tone to music, it's a tailored facial treatment, incorporating facial mapping to unveil any signs of inner health and well-being issues, and gives you the chance to have a professional come up with a skincare routine just for you. Perfect for a woman with a face like sandpaper, then.

Within seconds of arriving at the Hanover Street shop, my cold hands were wrapped around a cup of herbal tea and my therapist, Emma, was showing me through to the comfortable treatment room tucked at the back of the shop.

My session began with a long chat which encompassed my skincare routine and my lifestyle. (There was a funny moment when Emma thought the "one or two a night" I mentioned in relation to wine referred to bottles rather than glasses.)

Misunderstandings cleared up, the long and short of my condition was I don't drink enough water to keep my skin hydrated and I need to up the strength of my moisturiser to something more suited to harsh east coast winds. Once I was up on the comfy bed Emma worked through the steps of the personalised facial she'd devised for me, using a chamomile cleanser followed by orange flower toner then a white tea mask. The smells were truly delightful and I could feel my skin drinking in the moisture. While the mask did its work I was treated to a hand massage, then Emma applied the most wonderful jasmine enriching moisturiser and a touch of rose balm to my face, to soothe the driest patches.

After an hour or so, with a list of the products used safely in my grasp, I walked out into the blast of cold air, my skin feeling rejuvenated. My sandpaper chin already a thing of the past.'
